About the role
Amazon Optics operates the physical security infrastructure that protects the most sensitive computing environments on Earth: AWS data centers, Amazon corporate offices, and Leo ground stations. We manage more than 600K access control devices and 300K cameras. We integrate video management, access control, and intrusion alarming into one platform, and we strengthen it with AI analytics. Our job is to make every physical space Amazon operates continuously understood, proactively protected, and programmatically extensible.
We are looking for a Principal Product Manager - Technical (PM-T) to own the holistic product strategy for Optics, own its profit and loss (P&L), and drive the platform toward the future state.
You will own the product narrative for the entire Optics platform, comprised of divisions for access control technology, incident response, video surveillance and analytic capabilities. You will
define the product strategy that replaces a fragmented customer ecosystem with an automated, extensible platform, and you will sequence the investments that get us there.
You will make sure Optics serves its internal customers first while shaping the platform foundations that keep our longer-term options open. You will partner directly with the Optics organization leader, with directors and VPs across our customer organizations, and with security and infrastructure leaders throughout Amazon. You will operate where product strategy, physical security, and platform architecture meet.
The ideal candidate is a systems thinker who is comfortable with deep technical ambiguity, fluent in translating customer problems into product requirements, financially literate enough to own a P&L and defend a cost model, and credible with both principal engineers and VP-level stakeholders.
Key job responsibilities
- Own the product strategy and roadmap for the Optics platform
- Own the Optics P&L and the financial narrative
- Shape the market offering
- Represent the voice of the internal customer
- Own the platform strategy that lets customers move at their own pace
- Own the resource allocation model between platform and features
- Establish the responsibility contract with customers
- Write the narratives that align the organization
- Define and own the metrics that measure product and business success
- Raise the product bar for the organization
A day in the life
Your days blend deep strategic work, customer discovery, financial modeling, and cross-organizational partnership. No two look the same, but a representative day includes:
Morning - You block your first hours for the work that needs uninterrupted focus: drafting the product strategy narrative for an upcoming leadership review.
Mid-morning - You meet with your finance partner to pressure-test the P&L and refine the cost-per-site model, reconciling the savings that our first-party hardware and quantifying the opportunity cost of deferring the platform investment another quarter.
Afternoon - You meet with a director from a customer organization and a peer leader from an adjacent Amazon infrastructure team.
Late afternoon - You review the platform's product and business health metrics. Cost per site is trending the right way. You draft the mechanism to track it so the signal reaches the right people to make business decisions, and close the loop with engineering to ensure the target goal is achieved.
About the team
Amazon Optics develops the software that gives security operators actionable situational awareness in the physical domain. Our vision is simple and ambitious: Anticipate threats. Redefine physical security. Build a safer world. We build simple, scalable systems that automate safety and security, giving security operators the tools to measure and monitor their environment.
We are the singular enterprise security product that integrates the three core sectors of physical security into one platform: video management, access control, and intrusion alarming and perimeter protection. We strengthen all three with AI analytics. We eliminate hard dependencies on third-party and disparate systems, so our customers get a cohesive, flexible solution and never need intricate knowledge of the systems underneath to get value from what we build.
We protect the environments that matter most: customer data, cryptographic material, and the people who work alongside them. We do it at a scale no one else operates, and we build the cloud infrastructure it runs on. That combination is our right to win. We solve our own hardest problems first, at a scale that makes the solution durable and the economics compound.
Culturally, we are a team that leads with people. We invest in growth, we celebrate wins by name, and we make sure everyone has a voice. We value builders who bring warmth alongside backbone, who can disagree and commit, and who care as much about developing the people around them as about shipping the product. We move fast, we hold a high bar, and we protect a sustainable pace while we do it. If you want to own the product strategy and the economics for a platform that protects Amazon's most critical spaces, and you want to do it on a team that will invest in you, this is the place.
