Competitive NYC Relocation Packages (2026)

If you’re a New York City employer hiring out-of-town employees and designing a relocation program, here’s what you should know to be competitive in 2026.

This guide covers benchmark research on what employers in the city across Tech, Finance and Healthcare tend to offer, and New York-specific nuances that consume most budgets. Research comes from trusted sources including the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances, Levels.fyi’s employer-reported compensation data, and New York State’s official tax withholding tables.

Types of corporate relocation packages

Across corporate relocations to New York City and globally, many employers used to offer “fully managed moves” that entailed the employer handling all expense and vendor management, but have recently shifted toward lump-sum relocation packages. Lump sums, also referred to as Moving Stipends, reduce organizational complexity and are typically preferred by employees because of the greater flexibility. The amounts for these monetary benefits typically range between $5,000 and $15,000, and up to $75,000 or more for executive positions, and can be paid in a variety of ways.

StructureHow it worksProsCons
Lump sumCash or cash-equivalent payment, the employee arranges everything.Simple to administer. Flexible for the employee, who decides where the money goes.Fully taxable unless grossed up. No guardrails on how it’s spent.
ReimbursementThe employee pays first, submits receipts, and waits for the company to pay them back.Only pays out actual costs. Easy to cap a budget.Requires cash on hand that many people people don’t have and adds administrative friction.
Fully managedEmployers pay and coordinate all moving expenses on behalf of their employee.Employee never touches the money or the tax hit on most services. Consistent experience across hires.Large administrative burden on HR team and/or cost burden if relocation management is outsourced to a white-glove service.

Making it Work for Your Team

The purpose of a moving stipend is not always to cover 100% of moving expenses, but it’s important to understand how helpful your package actually is in the context of New York City. If moving costs are still likely to be a real burden for employees, the chances they decline your offer, or delay their move, go up. Use our Cost of Living Calculator to better understand typical moving expenses in NYC.

On top of whatever standard structure you go with, there’s a few other things to consider layering in make it work for your team:

Gross Ups: New York’s combined flat supplemental withholding rate is 37.95% — 22% federal, 11.7% state, 4.25% city, before FICA. That means for an employee to actually net $5,000 after withholding or reporting taxes on their own at the end of the year, an employer would need to “gross up” the payment to roughly $8,000. Not all employers gross up their relocation stipends but it’s a practice worth considering and discussing with a tax professional.

Payment Timing: from an employee’s perspective, the sooner they receive the lump sum, the better. The median American household holds about $8,000 according to the Federal Reserve’s Survey of Consumer Finances, so spending the typical $10,000-plus relocation budget in the short window a move requires often means an employee draws on savings.

If you’re seeking a way to pay out a lump-sum to an employee prior to being on payroll, RELO NYC can assist. Through our API integration with Tremendous, employers are empowered to disburse relocation funds to employees globally and employees can choose how to receive the funds outside of your established payroll system. Plus, year-end tax reporting on these payouts are handled as part of the service.

Non-monetary relocation assistance

Aside from expenses, here’s a shortlist of other challenges your employees are likely to encounter during their relocations:

  • Neighborhood search. Pointing a mover at the right neighborhood for their commute, budget, and life stage before they start browsing listings, rather than after they’ve fallen for an apartment in the wrong part of the city.
  • School search. For relocating families, matching zoning and application timelines to the move date, which matters more in New York than almost anywhere else given how tightly school assignment is tied to address.
  • Real estate regulations. Explaining the fees, guarantor requirements, and co-op-specific rules a mover will hit that don’t exist, or work differently, anywhere else they’ve lived.

RELO NYC’s proprietary tech platform gives HR teams and their hires guides, digital tools, and a place to track moves in one interconnected spot. Plus, if you’re looking to connect with a real human with on-the-ground experience living in New York our team is available for 1:1 consultations.
